In 1966 Hughes joined the US Air Force and after training became a crew member on Lockheed C-130 aircraft. In Vietnam, Hughes was awarded the
Air Force Commendation Medal, as well as the Viet Nam Gallantry Cross for many combat missions. Hughes also had over 100 combat missions on C-130 aircraft in other
countries for which he was awarded Expeditionary Medals.
In his career, Hughes has worked at Lockheed Skunkworks on the program developing the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter. Hughes also spent

In recent years his love of aviation has spilled over to designing and building Part 103 ultralight aircraft.
Bob states, "I enjoy talking to other ultralight builders. Life is a continual learning experience. It is fun to see how others approach building Part 103 aircraft.
The basics are the same but new materials and engine technologies are making it easier to keep the weight within specifications
with safety."
Finishing up the design and starting the build of a new aircraft called the Hughes103. Starting the welding on the new fuselage. I will post pictures of the Hughes103
ultralight when further along.
Another recent project is the build of an Ed Fisher designed "Micro Mong" biplane. This Mong was built with a 4130 chromoly tube fuselage
and aluminum framed wings. The Mong has a Polini 303 engine.
